Waste Batteries can contain a variety of different metals and acidic solutions and some types of batteries can be extremely heavy. It is important that the utmost care is taken when handling these products.
- The appropriate personal safety equipment is to be worn and used at all times Eg. Gloves, Apron, Safety Glasses and Enclosed Footwear.
- Care to be taken at all times to avoid dropping and spilling of any wet battery
- When lifting or moving, consideration of the battery weight needs to be taken into account to avoid back injuries
- Contents of a wet battery can be extremely corrosive and damage items it may come in contact with, eg. Metal, Fabric, Paint Work, Carpet, Concrete, just to name a few. Extreme care must be taken.
- Battery acid spill clean up is simple. Identify the type of battery that has spilled. Determine if it is an acid or an alkaline battery. Alkaline battery acid spills can be neutralized with acidic substances. These substance include vinegar and lemon juice. Acidic batteries can be neutralized with alkaline substances like baking soda and a small amount of water. Never apply water directly to the acid. Be sure to utilize the proper personal safety equipment when doing battery acid spill clean up.
- Battery acid is extremely harmful if it comes into contact with a person’s skin or eyes. Immediately apply large amounts of clean water to the affected area and, if required, refer the person to a doctor or hospital.
- Transportation of Waste Batteries from personal use should always be carried out with care. Whether they be hand held (dry) batteries or vehicle/boat (wet) batteries they should always be placed in a sealed plastic container to contain any spill and in the rear of the vehicle away from passengers.
- Always keep Waste Batteries away from children and animals.
